The 99 seat Theatre was run by a group of volunteers, with all profits going back into the theatre.

Daylesford Cinema offers facilities for live productions, providing a venue for community groups to showcase their talent as well as hosting various forms of entertainment.

The cinema is currently showing the latest releases at the Daylesford Town Hall from Boxing Day 2018 for the duration of the school holiday period, then each weekend.

History

The Daylesford Town Hall has been used as a picture show and film house for much of the period 1910 till 1930.

Different operators and companies paid Council to hire the hall to show their films which attracted both locals and tourists.

Star Photo Play Co. and Alpha Picture Co were among the earliest presenters,

Both companies soon established other venues, but continued to use the Town Hall at various periods.

During 1925 the Royal Pictures operated until mid year and was replaced by the Town Hall Pictures Company.

Mr Christie was showing films at the Drill Hall Pictures in early 1920s and then later at the Town Hall prior to him building the new Rex Theatre.

“Going to the pictures” was a treat for adults and children alike, films were shown mid week and Saturdays, often with full houses. Cake and confectionery stores prospered along Vincent St.

Bright dynamic film posters were displayed on boards outside the front of the Town Hall to attract attendance and the Daylesford Advocate would always provide an insight into the next films.

The cinema had a seating capacity of 859 (306 in the dress circle and 553 in the stalls).

Sound was installed in the cinema in March 1930. Cinemascope was introduced in 1955 to accommodate a wider screen.

The cinema closed its doors in 1963.

In 2018 once again the Town Hall is being used as a Movies Theatre. During the Spring School Holidays several recently released movies were shown.
