PHOENIX CINEMA
@ THE REX

Our Story
The Phoenix @ The Rex in Daylesford, a beautiful Spanish colonial-style building designed by the same people who created Melbourne's famous Regent Theatre. The Rex first opened in 1929 and entertained locals for over three decades before closing in 1963 when TV became popular. Although the building was used for other things afterwards, the community brought a smaller cinema back to life there in 2013.
While this didn't last due to council purchasing the building and causing the cinema to cease operations in 2017, it demonstrated how much people in Daylesford loved having a cinema as it operated successfully for 3 years whilst paying commercial rent and making a healthy profit.
Now, the Phoenix Cinema is starting a new chapter, having been bought in 2022 by local families, well-known artists David and Yuge Bromley, and business owners Eddie and Malinka Comelli, which is great news for this much-loved local landmark. To make it financially viable, we again are calling on volunteers to assist in the running of the cinema.
